Yoga at Highcliffe with Kathryn Carlisle

We are delighted to welcome yoga instructor, Kathryn Carlisle to the Highcliffe studio in January. We recently caught up with her to hear about her classes and how her time in India has informed her own yoga practice.

How did you become a yoga teacher?

I’ve always loved and been immersed in the world of yoga, and through my connection and experiences with India, I was inspired to start my own practice in order to spread joy and contribute something meaningful to the world. After 15 years of doing my own practice, the birth of my daughter motivated me to become a yoga teacher and train at the British Wheel of Yoga, where they have teaching courses that cover philosophy, anatomy and history.

Does your time in India influence you?

I travel to India to intensively study and practice yoga. I have various teachers in India, some of whom have studied with lyengar, and being around them is a wonderful reminder of the amazing benefits of being a student. I’m able to absorb their knowledge and experience and share it with my students in a therapeutic way. Above all else, I find India an endless source of inspiration.

What are your daily morning rituals?

A cup of tea! I spend my mornings with a grounding practice inspired by nature, often including current themes that I am teaching. This helps me to understand how my classes feel.

What can we expect from your classes?

My classes are uplifting, positive, safe and dynamic. I teach from a natural approach which is often inspired by the seasons. Throughout the practice I will give essential information on the anatomy and philosophy of the poses, and my aim is to share my love and knowledge of yoga rather than a ‘do it with me’ approach.

What's your connection to this area?

I have lots of friends in North Cornwall as well as some students and classes too.

Favourite thing about living here?

The sea and the connection to nature.

How do you like to unwind on holiday?

Practice yoga! I also love swimming in the sea, especially on warm tropical islands. I am passionate about food and I am plant obsessed! I love to cook Indian food too.
